Is Shopify Plus Worth It?
Shopify Plus was made for merchants who are doing over a million dollars a year and its price reflects this. Similar to the increased cost of upgrading to Magento Enterprise, taking your Shopify store to the next level is going to be pricey.
Of course, that doesn't mean it isn't worth it - more on that in a moment.
How Much Does Shopify Plus Cost?
Shopify Plus pricing will vary depending on the online revenue that you do every year.
The price of Shopify Plus starts at $2,000 a month, which I know is a ton of money for any company. Plus (no pun intended), the amount you end up paying is going to go up depending on how much online revenue you do.
That's because you'll actually be charged 0.25 % of your monthly revenue if it's greater than $2,0000/month.
So, basically, the cost of Shopify Plus is $2,000/month until your monthly revenue exceeds $800,000. At that point, you begin paying the 0.25%.
To put that into context, if your online store is currently pulling in $1,000,000 a month in revenue, the price for Shopify Plus would jump to $2,500/month.
And, again, this overhead is really why Shopify Plus is meant for online companies that are consistently making at least $1,000,000 every month.
Is Shopify Plus Worth the Price?
The question comes down to whether or not the added features Shopify Plus offers are worth the steep increase in price.
Before we jump into those features, I want to point out that many of them can be added to your standard Shopify site without paying $2,000 or more a month. So, if you're thinking about making the switch for specific types of functionality, contact our Shopify developers and they'll tell you what that would entail.
Alright, with that said, there are still three other reasons you might learn to live with the increase in Shopify Plus Pricing.
1. Shopify Plus Can Handle MASSIVE Amounts of Traffic
The first is that Shopify Plus can simply handle WAY more transactions than the standard version. I'm talking about more than 10,000 transactions A MINUTE! If you're seeing those kinds of sales, you just can't settle for a free platform. It won't take long for your site's popularity to overwhelm it.
2. Your Business Gets Unlimited Staff Accounts
The second reason I know many companies love Shopify Plus is that there's no ceiling on the number of staff accounts they can have.
Once again, for a small company, this might not seem like a big deal. However, if you're scaling up or it's been a while since you outgrew your current eCommerce platform, this kind of freedom is a welcomed advantage. Being able to quickly add professionals to your account whenever you want so they can get to work ASAP is SO much better than going through the grueling process of requesting new accounts.
3. An Account Manager Will Always Be Available
And, third, Shopify Plus accounts comes with their own account managers. They are tasked with offering their accounts priority support whenever they need it.
That's a very attractive feature to companies seeing more than $1,000,000 in revenue every month. For them, even a small problem can be an extremely costly one, so knowing they can get answers and solutions ASAP is worth the extra investment.
You've probably experienced at least one of these types of problems before (unless your eCommerce site is brand-new or you're just one of our clients).
Even if your site only goes down for just a couple of hours, you could lose thousands of dollars of sales. If something like that happens on a big shopping day like a Black Friday or Cyber Monday, it could mean HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of dollars go down the drain.
Should Your Company Switch to Shopify Plus?
So, for the priority support, I do think it's worth it if you if your company is doing millions of dollars online.
However, if you are enterprise merchant, and you're in the market for a new platform, I actually wouldn't just go with Shopify Plus.
Instead, I would consider other premium platforms like Magento and BigCommerce. They offer similar features to Shopify Plus and then some.
Also, the thing about it is, once you get up to that level of enterprise software, there is room to negotiate. If you see a platform you know would fit your company's eCommerce needs, by all means, contact the company and try negotiating the price. You have nothing to lose and plenty of businesses have been very successful at getting a lower price (obviously, it helps if your eCommerce company is successful, too).
If you're a smaller merchant, Shopify is a great platform. And there's no reason to rush into Shopify Plus, especially given the price tag.
But if you're a larger merchant, I do think it makes more sense. There are other features that we'll go into in another video that separates standard Shopify from Shopify Plus, but I will say that I think the added support makes it worth it for companies with enough revenue.
