Magento Development

Magento development services, engineered to scale.

Magento development services from a Magento 2 development company of Adobe-certified engineers. We take over self-hosted Magento Open Source stores with module debt, an aging Luma theme or undocumented multi-store setups, fix what hurts, and ship the rest to platform standards. The engineers who scope your build are the ones who write it.

Why brands come to us

When to hire a Magento development agency: the inherited codebase is holding you back.

Stores stall for the same reasons: inherited Magento 2 codebases nobody wants to touch, module debt that makes every upgrade a gamble, Luma storefronts that should have been Hyvä, MSI and multi-store catalogs that were never documented, and a self-hosted stack only the last agency understood. We are the Magento development company brands call when the off-the-shelf phase is over. As a certified Magento agency, we pair senior engineering with commerce strategy, so the work ships and the numbers follow. Brands already on the licensed enterprise edition, Commerce Cloud, or native B2B shared catalogs should use our Adobe Commerce development services instead. Once the build is live, our Magento support services keep the same senior team on the store. Serving the UK? Our Magento agency in London works your hours with team members in the city. Inherited stores

Magento 2 development starts with an audit: what we check first on an inherited store.

Much of our Magento development work starts on a store someone else built. Before we quote any change, we look at six things, because they decide whether a fix takes a day or turns into a rebuild.

Module inventory and core overrides

Every third-party and custom module, what it rewrites, and whether its vendor still supports it. Class rewrites and preferences on core models are the usual reason an upgrade breaks.

Patch level and PHP version

Which 2.4.x release and security patches are installed, whether they went in through Composer or were copied in by hand, and how far the PHP version sits from Adobe's supported list.

Indexers, cron, and queues

Indexers stuck in a reindex loop, cron jobs that overlap, and message queue consumers that never run are behind many slow admin panels and stale prices.

Theme and front end

Whether the theme extends Luma or forked it, how much JavaScript loads on product and category pages, and whether a Hyvä rebuild would cost less than fixing what is there.

Multi-store and catalog setup

Websites, stores, and store views, attribute sets, and MSI sources and stocks, mapped and documented so nobody has to guess how a price or a stock level is calculated.

Hosting and deploys

The server stack (PHP-FPM, Varnish, Redis, OpenSearch), how code reaches production, and whether there is a staging copy and a rollback path.

Want the audit on its own first? Start with a Magento code audit, then decide what to build.

Client-first approach

A Magento development partner that stays after launch.

Magento stores live for years, through PHP upgrades, search engine changes, and a steady run of security patches. The engineers who launch your store stay on it for that work, so nobody has to relearn your codebase.

Which Magento edition to run

Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce: pick the Magento edition, then build on it.

The edition you run shapes licensing cost, feature set, and how much custom engineering you need. This page is for Magento Open Source and Magento 2: self-hosted, no annual Adobe license, and the custom modules that close the gap. Adobe Commerce is the licensed enterprise edition, with native B2B, shared catalogs, and Commerce Cloud. We recommend from your catalog and roadmap, not from whichever license is easier to sell.

Magento Open Source

The free, self-hosted edition, built on the same core codebase as Adobe Commerce. With no license fee, the budget goes to hosting, extensions, and engineering. Features that Adobe Commerce includes, such as B2B company accounts or content staging, come from extensions or from custom modules we build and maintain.

Best when
  • Your catalog and order volume suit a self-managed stack
  • Custom pricing or B2B logic is cheaper to build than to license
  • You want to own the hosting, the code, and the roadmap
Adobe Commerce & Cloud

The licensed edition, self-hosted or on Adobe Commerce Cloud. It adds native B2B with company accounts, shared catalogs, and quotes, plus content staging, customer segments, and Adobe support. The license is priced on your gross sales, so it pays off when you would otherwise build those features yourself.

Best when
  • You need native company accounts, shared catalogs, and quotes
  • Managed cloud hosting or an Adobe support SLA is required
  • Merchandisers need staging and segments without custom code

Not sure which fits? Our Magento audit recommends the edition that fits your numbers, not our margins. Want strategy, design, and growth handled alongside the engineering? That is our full-service Magento 2 agency team.

Why brands choose us

Why choose IWD as your Magento development agency.

Magento rewards careful engineering and punishes shortcuts. Many of the stores we inherit look fine on the surface and break on the next upgrade, because modules rewrite core classes, patches were applied by hand, or the theme forked Luma years ago. We build so the next 2.4.x release is routine.

  • Adobe-certified engineering

Our developers hold Adobe Commerce certifications. Custom code uses plugins, observers, and service contracts instead of core class rewrites, so Composer updates and security patches apply cleanly.

  • Senior Magento engineers on every ticket

The engineer who reads your di.xml during the audit is the one who fixes it. There is no training bench and no handoff to a team that has never opened your codebase.

  • We have built Magento extensions, not only stores

IWD has built and sold its own Magento extensions, including a one step checkout and an order manager, so we know the platform from the module side as well as the storefront.

  • Upgrades are part of the plan

Every build ships with a patch and upgrade routine: staging first, Composer-managed modules, and a regression pass before each 2.4.x release goes live.

How to work with us

Magento development engagement models and tech stack.

Pick the model that fits the work. Most clients start with a fixed-scope project and move to a retainer once the store is live, with the same senior Magento developers throughout.

Engagement models
  • Fixed-scope project: builds, replatforms, migrations and upgrades with a firm, itemized quote before work starts.
  • Development retainer: a monthly block of senior hours for roadmap features, fixes and support.
  • Dedicated Magento team: senior engineers embedded with your in-house team, without the hiring overhead.
Our Magento tech stack
  • Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce 2.4.x, PHP 8 and Composer
  • MySQL or MariaDB, OpenSearch, Redis, Varnish and RabbitMQ
  • Hyvä (Tailwind CSS, Alpine.js), Luma, and headless with GraphQL and PWA Studio
  • Git-based CI/CD with staging environments, on Adobe Commerce Cloud or self-hosted
How we work

Our Magento development process, from audit to measurable results.

01

Audit

We inventory every module, look for core overrides and plugin conflicts, check the patch level and PHP version, and profile the slowest pages, indexers, and cron jobs.

02

Architect

A phased plan that says which modules to refactor, replace, or remove, with scope, timeline, and a firm number before any code is written.

03

Build

Two-week sprints on a staging copy of your store, code review on every merge request, and weekly demos of working features.

04

Launch and maintain

Deploys run through CI with a rollback path. After launch we apply security patches, plan each 2.4.x upgrade, and keep tuning speed.

Questions, answered

Magento development FAQs: what merchants ask before they hire us.

The questions we hear most before a build starts. If yours isn't here, just ask.

Which Magento versions do you work on?

Magento Open Source and Magento 2, plus inherited Magento 1 stores that need rescuing or replatforming. We also work on Adobe Commerce Cloud when brands run the licensed enterprise edition. We work on existing stores, inherited codebases, and brand-new builds.

Can you take over a Magento store another agency built?

Yes, and it is one of the most common ways clients start with us. The audit covers the module list, core overrides, cron and indexer health, the patch level, and the hosting stack. You get the findings in plain language and a prioritized plan before we change anything.

How long does a Magento development project take?

A focused audit and roadmap takes two to three weeks. Feature work and mid-sized builds run three to six months, and enterprise replatforms or B2B builds usually run six to twelve. The audit gives you a timeline for your store, not a generic estimate.

How do you scope and quote a Magento project?

Scoping starts from the store itself: how many third-party and custom modules it runs, its integrations, the number of store views, and where it is hosted. You get a firm, itemized quote on the first call, so you know what you are committing to before work begins.

Can we hire your Magento developers as an embedded team?

Yes. Senior Magento engineers can join your sprints and code reviews, working in your repository and your deploy pipeline as part of your team. Fixed-scope projects and monthly retainers are available too.

Do you also handle Hyvä, headless, and B2B?

Yes. We build Hyvä and headless PWA storefronts, and full B2B commerce with company accounts, quote-to-cart, and ERP integration. It is the same senior team across all of it.

What does a Magento development agency do?

A Magento development agency designs, builds and maintains stores on Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce: custom modules, Hyvä and theme front ends, ERP and payment integrations, migrations and version upgrades, performance work, and ongoing support. At IWD one senior team covers all of it.

Should I hire a Magento development agency or a freelancer?

A freelancer can handle small fixes. Once the store has integrations, several storefronts, or revenue that depends on uptime, a Magento development agency is the safer choice: you get code review, cover when someone is away, and engineers across back end, front end and DevOps.

What should I look for in a Magento development company?

The senior engineers who scope your build should be the ones who write the code, and they should stay after launch. Ask any Magento development company whether the team survives the sale, whether they hold Adobe certifications, and whether they build to platform standards so upgrades never break what shipped. That is how we work, and it is why most clients keep us on for years.
